David Wilson

Artist
David G. Wilson was born December 9th,1953 in the Caribbean island-nation- The Commonwealth of Dominica (Dominica). He is an entirely self-taught artist who has been painting for the past forty-nine (49) years. Wilson immigrated to the USA in September, 1976, when he became enamored with the museums in New York and other east coast cities (Philadelphia, PA; Boston, MA; New Haven and Hartford, CT; Baltimore, MD; Wilmington,DE and Washington D C.) In fact, as far as he and his wife can drive within one day or weekend. As a result, he was tremendously inspired to advance his painting career and follow in the footsteps of the European Old Masters by simply visiting museums in every city to which they travel. However, due to family issues, he chose not to study art (regrets that plague him constantly). Instead, he attended York College, CUNY, from which he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Economics, Class of 1980. In 2005, he enrolled at Touro College, graduating with a Master's degree in Instructional Technology, Class of 2009. Presently, he is a retired teacher, having taught Spanish and French at a Middle and High School in Queens, NY.

His frequent visits to museums all over the USA and more recently London and Paris have served as his instructor. His predilection for visual puns was first kindled by his late mother, Mrs. (Nurse) Leoma A. Wilson, (1911 -2010) when she was teaching his late brother, Edward, and him to read. Having asked Eddie to identify the map of Italy, which neither of them could identify, their mom then gave them an unforgettable hint. She said, 'Italy is kicking Sicily'. Her pareidolia was instantly transferred to David and it kindled his interest in visual pun. The double entendre lyrics of his life-long calypsonian hero, The Mighty Sparrow, further inflamed his passion for visual and auditory puns. But the final catalyst that combusted his passion for visual puns was his discovery of the double image paintings of the Spanish surrealist painter, Salvador Dali and also his reading of Leonardo da Vinci's suggestion to artists about enhancing their faculties for creative invention. That made him realize that he had found the style in which he wanted to continue painting. So, he sought to exploit this style to the fullest extent possible, with the ambition to transcend the accomplishment, in that genre, of even Dali himself. In his style, which he calls ‘Anthropomorphic Alternative Reality: An exercise in Ultra-Perceptive Plausible Juxtaposition.' He seeks to portray alternative realities within the human form by strategically and plausibly juxtaposing commonplace elements that reveal to him their anthropomorphic characteristics. However, his use of inanimate objects to represent the human form is also reminiscent of the cruel and reductive equation that slavery imposed on his African ancestors, depreciating them, in the eyes of their slave-masters, to the level of merchandise; bought and sold on the auction block.

The influence of European old master painters, however, is not lost in his endeavor since Leonardo da Vinci instructed, 'the artist may enhance his faculties for creative invention by staring at a stain on the wall and therein perceive whatever he wishes to see.' He has used this technique to discover what he calls ' mnemonic images' (objects that his mind's eye perceives within an image; images that are reminiscent of aspects of his personal life story) in the images that inspire him. The mantra that he uses to rationalize his observations is: 'In every squiggle, there is a image hidden'.

'Mnemonic images' are the component parts of his creations, which he discovers when he scrutinizes the contours of a source image. They frequently have idiosyncratic significance. The ubiquitous 'hand of bananas' is a differential reference to the 'hand that fed him' which is the hand of my late father, Mr. Henzie A. Wilson (1919-1974), who worked for seventeen of his formative years with the Banana Industry in his native, Commonwealth of Dominica, W.I. The boats in every painting were his dad’s working capital after he left the Banana Industry in 1969. The mountains which frequently double as eyebrows are located in his hometown of Portsmouth, Dominica, where he first observed my parents' hard work trying to raise him and his siblings in a decent home environment. That recurrent bay with boats moored in the harbor is also Portsmouth and it represents his mother's face, because it was in that town that his mother first stimulated his imagination and gave birth to his pareidolia and the perception of visual puns. The inconspicuous Y that simulates a woman's cleavage etched on vases and which represents a woman's accentuated bosom is a referential tribute to the one on which he has laid his head for the past forty-three (43) years - Y represents Yvonne. Every nude, whether she may be in the form of fruits and vegetables (nutritious and delectable) or table and chairs or an apparition between trees is none other than his muse whose sinuous contours beguiled him one Sunday morning, February 19th, 1978.
